Then, in August last year, Chinese EV battery manufacturer SVOLT unveiled what it claims to be the world's first cobalt-free battery. The company has been selling cobalt-free battery cells since February 2021. Specifically, SVOLT developed NMx cells, made from cathode material (75% nickel and 25% manganese).
LFP batteries have improved, leading more car manufactures to adopt the technology, which is far cheaper than batteries with cobalt. Tesla already uses LFP batteries in the Model 3 and Model Y vehicles it manufactures in China. And Tesla says it will now expand use of LFP batteries to all its entry-level Model 3 and Model Y vehicles .
Tesla confirmed that nearly half of all its vehicles produced last quarter are already using cobalt-free iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries. The information also gives us an interesting insight into Tesla's mix of models, which is generally quite opaque.
